Program Components
In an effort to provide students with the skills needed to enter
and complete a college or university of choice, students participate
in the program throughout high school on a year-round basis. This
structure is designed to help ensure their continued education. Upward Bound is divided into three components: 1) academic, 2)
summer, 3) bridge.
The Academic Year Component is designed to provide a variety of
experiences including,:
A tutorial program
- College preparatory and career planning workshops
- College and university
visits
- Study skills and test-taking strategy workshops
- Academic and personal
counseling sessions
- Field trips to local businesses and cultural
centers
- Personal development workshops
- Parent forums
The Summer Component is designed to provide students with instruction in college preparatory coursework, and a simulated college experience, thus taking the fear out of going to college. Summer activities include:
- A six week residential experience on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University
- Instruction in upcoming high school courses (according to the student's home-school's fall schedule) Academic courses include: all levels of college prep math, science, English, a foreign language, history and a banking and finance course.
- Enrichment classes (i.e. computer literacy, dance, aerobics, swimming, art, life skills, music, etc.) are offered in the afternoon.
- Visits to a variety of out-of-state colleges and universities
- Social and recreational activities in the evening
The Bridge Component is designed to bridge the gap between high
school and college. In order to qualify, students must:
- Be high school graduates, have taken the ACT and/or SAT, have
applied to at least three different colleges or university and
be accepted to at least one, and have completed all other assignments
related to preparation for post-secondary education.
- Students can
expect to:
- Take two OWU courses taught by OWU professors
- Credits earned transfer
to the college of university of their choice (3.75 semester hours
for a semester school and 11.0 credit hours for a quarter school)
- Receive
a savings (and monetary value) of over $4,360. (There are no
costs incurred by the parents or guardians.)
- Actual college life experience
